Jack Walker, arguably the best ever football club owner.

Got a feeling Rovers can force a replay here. No idea why other than them being away from home, though given City were on the wrong end of one of the great giantkillings in FA Cup history in the Final maybe they'll destroy all opposition in their path.

Talk about a tale of two takeovers. If ever there were two clubs to epitomise the sheer randomness of football’s natural selection, they are Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers.
There was little method to the madness as these two football clubs underwent seismic changes within two years of each other in 2008 and 2010.
In Manchester, before the days of Vincent and his Tan-trums at Cardiff City, there was another eccentric Far East owner in town: Thaksin Shinawatra.

By the end of his brief tenure at the Etihad Stadium, with Shinawatra’s assets frozen and the former Thai Prime Minister essentially a fugitive from his native country amid charges of corruption, the club were borrowing millions from former Chairman John Wardle just to cover the bills.
Shinawatra sold it as a masterplan, as proof of his business savvy but most at City would confess that Lady Luck intervened with the buyout of Sheikh Mansour, that it had become the stuff of desperation rather than sanity.
This is the thing about Premier League clubs being up for sale to random rich men. You just don’t know what you’re getting.
Mansour's millions: CIty's richly assembled squad travel to Ewood Park to face Championship Blackburn

For every Roman Abramovich, there is an Alexandre Gaydamak. For every Sheikh Mansour, there is an Indian poultry consortium placing their faith in Malaysian TV pundit Shebby Singh.
It may be a dream, it may be a nightmare. But it always a starts as a dream.
In the early stages for both the Sheikhs and the Venky’s, the new owners followed a rather similar script. Blackburn Rovers’ public pleas to Ronaldinho represented a pipe-dream of hilarious fancy, while Manchester City’s serious - but doomed - pursuit of Kaka became a source of great mockery.
Bad move: Steve Kean's appointment proved hugely unpopular with the fans

The similarities end there. As the two club’s prepare to meet in the FA Cup at Ewood Park on Saturday, the differences could hardly be more glaring.
For one club, it proved to be nothing more than teething problems and a lesson learned. For another, it was a warning of things to come.
It seems difficult to believe now but for the best part of two decades Blackburn - funded by the multi-million of Jack Walker and steered by the smart John Williams - were one of the Premier League’s most well-oiled financial machines.
When the Venky’s took over, their statement offered cause for optimism: ‘We plan to focus on leveraging the global influence in establishing Blackburn Rovers as a truly global brand.
‘We will absolutely respect the Jack Walker legacy and will be actively supporting the organisation to ensure that Blackburn Rovers remain one of the best-run clubs within the Premier League.’
These days, it reads as satire. A club previously envied for shrewdness, measured judgement and perspective has since made way for totally inexplicable chaos.
These are owners, let us not forget, that planned to drawn in the crowds with proposed free concerts at Ewood Park with global R&B stars Akon, Kelly Rowland and David Guetta.
These are owners that sacked Sam Allardyce, appointed Steve Keane and then pursued a sticker book of Galacticos.
Ronaldinho and David Beckham featured high on the agenda but their first window in charge brought Mauro Formica and Ruben Rochina as the only permanent signings.
These are owners that then persisted with Kean despite relegation, continued to stand by him and allowed just short of ten summer signings, only to then pull the trigger in September last year with the club 3rd in the Championship table.

Three managers later - of which two, Henning Berg and Michael Appleton - lasted less than ten weeks in the job and Blackburn ended the campaign 17th and just four points above the relegation zone.
Most destructively, though, these are owners that have overseen the humiliation of a proud football club and the disintegration of its support.
In 2009/10 season, the final campaign before the Venky’s arrival, Blackburn averaged a home crowd of 25,428.
This season in the Championship, the average at gate at Ewood Park has been 15,021.
Just think about that for a moment: over 10,000 people. Disillusioned. Disappeared.
By contrast, from the brink of financial implosion, the outlook for Manchester City could hardly be more brighter these days. A Premier League title, an FA Cup and the promise of consistent dominance.

Short stints: Both Michael Appleton (left) and Henning Berg lasted just a matter of weeks at the helm
For the first time in their history, the club has finished in the top 4 of the top-flight on three consecutive occasions and they have entered the knockout rounds of the UEFA Champions League this season.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side look destined to paint Manchester blue once more this season and with a squad boasting 25 full internationals, it surely cannot be too long before Europe follows.
For Blackburn, relegation has been a brutal reality check; facing up to an exercise in financial costcutting and downsizing.
Four managers and one relegation later, though, and Blackburn have now staggered into some accidental stability under Gary Bowyer.

Bowyer, who will celebrate a year in charge in March, has offered some much needed stability and an antidote to last season’s bedlam, when a Venky’s chicken was a surer bet to last longer than a Venky’s football manager.
Blackburn are now just two points off the play-off places and there is a place for cautious optimism in the New Year, with the wistful hope that the owners have finally exhausted that bank of ruinous ideas and discovered sanity.
Regardless, when they meet Manchester City on Saturday, it will offer a timely reminder at what could have been

You are going to destroy us by the way
tbh, i am quietly confident.

this is because of the way our second string took apart the championship leaders in the league cup, away from home

as usual, i have a nagging doubt that typical City are going to turn up

hey ho, you cant win them all

Tbf to Venkys, things seemed to have settled and I think if they give Bowyer time then he will get us promoted this season or next.

I feel a bit sorry for Venkys, they got shafted by that Anderson chap, what a forking crook he is. Is John Williams still with you guys, Venkys should get that man back at Rovers and things would look so much better, the man is a genius
