He tries to do too much when he's on the wing for me. Too much coming deep and dribbling and never finding that easy pass. Always holds onto it for an age. I just don't see him playing well for England at all because of the shithouse tactics we'll always employ and the lack of creative players.

I know that's only one winger and as such he should keep switching flanks. Both FB's will also get forward plenty.

Smalling is a better CB, unfortunately he's not a great FB.

Gerrard in the QB role with Wilshere and Barkley adding energy and drive.

TBH I think the Rooney Sturridge partnership has looked like it might have a bit of potential.

Bit similar to my shout there TS. I know it's laid out differently but the players would play the same. I think Henderson has to be in there instead of Barkley. Barkley has loads of potential but Henderson is having the better season, and more importantly does a whole lot more defensive work which is needed with Gerrard and Wilshere as the other midfielders imo

Well tbf I do believe form should be rewarded internationally, Barkley only recently back from injury so maybe I'd be happy with Henderson there now.

Take your point re his defensive work, but we need midfielders who are prepared to go past a man, even if that is a turn and sprint rather than real trickery. If we don't do that you get zoned out, possession but no penetration, a bit like Utd the other night

Whilst Sturridge can drift out wide his speed in the box means England need him more inside.

Spain has a lot of choice.

I am okay with Smalling being there as a CB, but he's crap at RB/WB. Not many CB's in squad.

Not much better than Welbeck ATM, not a starter but a good option to have.

Cleverley? I am amazed, there's plenty who should be there before him. IMO Hodgson is being overly faithful with his qualifying squad. He should be thinking, that was then, this is now!

I like Smalling as a CB too, but he hasn't been playing there and has been in dreadful form recently.

That's what I would try to build towards if I was Roy. Enough ability to control the game but loads of energy and pace to focus mainly on winning the ball quickly and countering.
This is the formation needed. Though id rather ox and carrick over hendo and gerrard.

It will work really well when walcott is fit

cbs are going to be a problem for the next few years

Richards and jones could be the next partnership. If both can stay fit and nail down cb roles in domestic football

Ox is a far supirior player to hendo. Gerrard is the weakest point in that team, I feel he would need barry in there with him to balance the team. I cannot see gerrard and wilshire working, you would lose so much from the latters game. Carrick is far more suited to play alongside wilshire

I also think this world cup could end gerrard at the top level. He hasnt been playing 2 games a week kn ghe english weather, let alone the brazilian heat.
