Walker ruled out after picking up a groin injury, apparently. Although he was already injured.

Sturridge
Oxlade Rooney Sterling
Gerrard Henderson/Carrick

That's what I'd try.
No Wilshire in your team? :o

Why would Ox be a much worse shout than Henderson? England aren't going in to the world cup with a realistic view of winning it so what's the point in playing safe with a solid but very unspectacular player in Henderson when Chamberlain is clearly the better option for the future? Surely it's better for Ox to play this year rather than in 4 years time with no experience in the world cup situation :S

Because one is a natural CM, with offensive and defensive output barely matched by any midfielders in the league. He's played the most games of any player in the most attacking team in the country, which is made up of quite a few English players who should be starting in the WC.

The other is a potentially top class winger, who has played a couple of games as a CM, but has spent most of the season injured.
What?

If you're basis is gonna be Wilshere and Gerrard, you'll need someone in front of them to get the ball to whoever is playing up front. Henderson isn't the man for that job. Or are you not wanting an AM and playing for draws in every game? :S

Henderson is a decent player, but that's as far as it goes for me

Carrick is a must, and don't say Gerrard is capable of playing that role effectively. He lacks the positional awareness and will lose the ball by playing hollywood balls all game long

Now Carrick isn't a world class player but he's by far the most capable ball playing DM we have and that alone should warrant him starting

Friendly or not, Cleverley/Welbeck/Defoe in the squad is a wind up.

Gerrard has been world class playing that role for us the last two years. Last season he passed more often and more accurately than both Pirlo and Alonso. He has also won more duels, more aerial duels, makes more recoveries, wins more tackles, makes more clearances and completes more blocks than Carrick. The hollywood stuff is complete rubbish, if Pirlo was playing like Gerrard the winkerthon would be unbearable.

Saggy, Wilshere and Gerrard are more than capable of distributing the ball. Henderson is there as the runner to break lines, and he has the added bonus of being hugely impressive at the defensive stuff. On the bolded part, there's very few who have as many goals and assists, while matching his defensive numbers. Ramsey is the only one off the top of my head.

And who would you rather than Defoe or Welbeck?

The four strikers I would take are Rooney, Sturridge, Lambert, and Rodriguez

I'd take the 4 PP suggested.

Cleverley, Welbeck and Defoe are just taking up spots for the sake of it, they aren't good enough.

If anything, it says more about Hodgson than anything else.

It's a shame Walcott is out. Him and Sturridge flanking Rooney would be immense on the counter. Imagine Gerrard on the ball with those three on the run ahead of him

I get fed up of the fact that the same names find their way into the squad despite being in poor form. Hodgson barks on about how he picks on merit and not on reputation, but then the likes of Defoe, Henderson, Cleverley, Cole, Lampard etc. make the squad.

I also get pissed off with it being pretty much all Premier League players 99% of the time. The gulf really isn't that much different between the Premier League and the Championship. There are a lot of players in the Championship that would do a job in the Premier League and are in great form at the moment.

Players like Jay Rodriguez and Ricky Lambert (who I think are poor players) shouldn't be in the squad.

Give a chance to some of the great English players operating in the Championship instead of dragging out the same overrated flops that don't perform...

Adam Clayon, Henri Lansbury, Danny Drinkwater, Danny Ings, David Nugent, Chris Martin...

There are plenty of candidates.

Actually, i wouldn't disagree with giving players in the championship an opportunity, you see how we continually flop and just wonder how many players are we missing out upon just because they play at a lesser level?

Not Nugent though.

So go for the Moyes mentality of picking good defensive players in attacking positions? Can't agree with that. And what are his defensive numbers? Because Kevin Nolan has better attacking numbers than him, for one.

Yeah just like that old defensive Brendan Rodgers

The most key passes and assists, and the highest defensive score. He's a more offensive player than anything. But his defensive workrate means you can drop a Lucas and play a Gerrard as the lone DM. Like how Vidal operated with Pirlo
