Socceroos veteran Brett Holman has been recalled to the national side for Thursday's (AEDT) friendly against Ecuador in London.

Holman replaces Ben Halloran, who has been ruled out with a hip injury.

Halloran had scans this week and following discussions between Australia's medical staff and his club (Fortuna Dusseldorf) it was decided the 21-year-old would remain in Germany to continue treatment.

"Ben was under a cloud and we received some further information about his injury, which showed it was in Ben's best interest that he was ruled out of the game," said Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou.

"It's a shame for Ben because he deserved the opportunity to make an impression at the camp and we will continue to watch him in the lead-up to the World Cup.

"We have brought in Brett Holman and I look forward to having Brett in the camp and for the Ecuador game.

"He has proven himself on the international stage and it will be good to get Brett into the group so he can get a feel for what we are trying to achieve."

Ends up 4-3 defeat.

Have to wonder what we could have achieved had Langerak hadn't been sent off early doors in the second half.

Still a far more vibrant performance than any of the tat we've dished up in recent internationals. We'll still get s**t caned in the World Cup but at least we're now trying to play decent football.

GOAT.
3-0 up and you lose 4-3 to a last minute goal. Incredible stuff.

That'll happen when Mitch Langerak decides to audition for UFC and the only replacement is Brad Jones.

Next match is in May against South Africa at Stadium Australia 3 days before the team departs for Brazil.

Forgotten by me in the aftermath of the 3-4 loss is the fact that Tim Cahill has broken the long standing goal scoring record held by Damien Mori for over a decade. Difference between Cahill and Mori's records are pretty much Mori's came against the Oceania minnows, Cahill has scored against some of the best teams in the world.

Unquestionably the greatest ever Socceroo. To think we almost lost him to Samoa because of a single appearance for Samoa's under 20s when he was 14, thank fork FIFA changed that ruling, I don't dare think of what the history of our national team would be without Cahill and his knack of scoring crucial goals.

Holman has retired I read today. One of Australia's only decent players, the Socceroos are forked.

my stronger support for the French still stands!

Holman, like most of the 2006 team is getting on in years and I think Ange is moving in the direction of the younger lads. That said if he even considers picking Lucas Neill I may go postal.

Now that the league season is over we can concentrate on preparations for the World Cup.

It's anyone's guess who will be in Postecoglou's 23, some you'd think are certainties but I'd say there are up to 10 spots in that squad which will surprise a few here.

Ange Postecoglou has finally done it, he's told Lucas Neill to fork off

Quote:

Lucas Neill went down fighting, but a lack of game time has cost the long-time Socceroos captain a spot in Australia's World Cup squad.

Coach Ange Postecoglou revealed on Tuesday he's told Neill he won't be selected to play at a third World Cup, saying the decision "weighs heavily" on him.

But he wasn't convinced the 36-year-old defender could cope with the rigours of soccer's showpiece event in Brazil next month.

Midfielder Mile Jedinak is favoured to be named captain, though Postecoglou says he's in no rush to appoint his World Cup skipper.

Informing Neill of his non-selection was tough.

"He was obviously very disappointed," said Postecoglou.

"It was difficult. He has worked damn hard to try and get himself ready and available. He has shown an enormous determination to go to this World Cup.

"I just had to make a decision not so much about the recent history, but the last six months.

"In terms of form and fitness, there just wasn't enough evidence there for me to say that he would be able to hold up in the World Cup."

Neill, captain of Australia's qualifying campaign, has led Australia 60 times - equal-most with 1970s leader Peter Wilson.

Postecoglou will name his 30-man preliminary World Cup squad next week but took the decision to tell Neill his fate early out of respect.

"I'm not going to do that with everyone but he is a unique case," said Postecoglou, adding that Neill intended to continue his career in Europe.

Neill, capped 96 times for Australia, struggled to find a club and enough game time since a stint in Japan ended last November, finally signing with English championship team Watford in February before a loan move to Doncaster Rovers.

"He was probably a little bit unlucky in a couple of the moves he made," Postecoglou said.

"And certainly from my perspective, if post-Christmas, from January onwards, if he'd had four months of football under his belt, I guess a different decision would have been made.

"It's not easy.

"He has shown outstanding determination and it's a credit to him.

"You can see why he has played for his country as many times as he has and why he was a leader. He has certainly gone down fighting."

His performances and behaviour over the last 5 years have tarnished a legacy that should have made him one of the all time great Socceroos.
