Jose is God
He has a win at all costs mentality, doesn't give a fork about how he does it as long as he wins. Similar to Fergie and Jose

If a manager had brought on an outfield player in the last minute of extra time just to hit a penalty would that have been silly? Of course not. It wasn't genius and it wasn't stupid, it was just the right decision to make at the time. It's a bit ridiculous yet not surprising that we have two sides claiming that.

Keeping any sub for penos just makes it seem like you've settled for them. Don't get why he couldn't make a change to affect the game in the 120 minutes beforehand.

I don't see how there are "sides". Here's my posts before I weighed everything up and decided for me it's a bad decision. There's a thought process, weighing up the pros and cons, then deciding.

Then Utd fans came in with the "if it was Rafa or Rodgers" and made it tribal purely because LVG is next Utd manager.

Is L. van Gaal really doing this? Bring on @TimKrul just for the penalty's....? What a boss!!! Great idea!!
Michael Caley ‏@MC_of_A 3m

There is no way a slightly better PK goalkeeper can be worth more than 40 minutes of the sub effect in a 0-0 game.

It's an interesting debate

This is one of the weirdest things I've seen.

I wonder is it purely mind games from LVG. Throw Costa Rica's concentration off

Could backfire, you have to imagine Krul feels kind of silly atm

You can't just say it's tribal because they think it's a good idea yet t annoyed when people accuse you of tribalism. His decision got them to a WC semi final and I'm pretty confident there was more thought put to it than "he's a slightly better PL keeper" or even mind games like you lot are trying to make out.

I can say it's tribal when they make it Liverpool vs Man Utd, hence me bowing out

Well when you and others fill the thread with comments on RVP being s**t and van Gaal being a spoofer and not much else then cry tribalism it looks a bit silly

I didn't realise there was a debate going on when poking fun at RVP's performance

Ah right so tribalism is fine as long as you say so. Fact is you are just as likely to play down any "genius" decision of van gaal's as united fans are to play it up, it looks daft when you try and pretend you're impartial

Well there's a difference in taking the p*** talking about star wars, and then actually debating when something interesting happens. Do you not agree?

Was I playing it down when I was posting Bielsa quotes or saying how it could be clever mind games?

You're just proving my point if anything, none of you guys wanted to discuss it with me when I posted the above two things. Then when I weigh it all up and decide it's a bad decision for me, you all want to call me out on it and claim it's just because I'm a Liverpool fan. Massive irony

I wasn't on last night, posted my thoughts on it earlier and you didn't comment on it.

The more I think about it, it's a stupid decision

You deprive your team of fresh legs in extra time (and Costa Rica really started to get a head of steam at the end through theirs)
You put pressure on your keeper coming on and risk damaging the starting keepers mentality (what if he faces a penalty in normal time in the next game or the final?)
That keeper is nailed on to have a howler or 2 next game.

Either way, Holland going through glosses over how ordinary Van Gaal was, starting Kuyt? Not putting Huntelaar on until added time? Poor.

Krul's a mag, his behaviour doesn't come as a surprise.

Id imagine the GK coach had a big say on the matter and having watched both at close quarters he believes that Krul is a better bet when it comes to pens.
Last night Shearer pointed out that Krul doesn't have a good pen record however this stat can be largely misleading depending on who the pens were against etc.
