The more I think about it, it's a stupid decision

You deprive your team of fresh legs in extra time (and Costa Rica really started to get a head of steam at the end through theirs)
You put pressure on your keeper coming on and risk damaging the starting keepers mentality (what if he faces a penalty in normal time in the next game or the final?)
Would have been discussed beforehand no doubt.

I don't see how that matters

Imagine the pressure you would feel trying to stop a penalty in the last minute of a world cup final, the whole country relying on you and the whole world watching. Then the immediate reaction from all of football is that your manager would prefer to sub you off if he could

I'd say there is a huge difference between a regulation peno and a shootout tbh. LVG got it spot on, and GK obviously knew - look at his reaction in coming off and then celebrating.

I think it might be different if you had a freak of a goalkeeper who saved more than he conceded, but Krul's record is s**t.

For me it's purely for mind games and not worth it

Like RT mentioned, it appeared that his sole purpose was the studying of penos. He went right way each time. It was an odd decision, and time will tell if it's affected Cliessen, but he got it right on the night and looking at things he seemed over the moon.

Look it's a good call in hindsight, my issue would be that he was in charge of a team that had 2 hours to score and he didn't really change anything during that period

Generally yeah, maybe he is pure shite at penalties. Maybe Krul speaks Spanish to say a few things to the CR players? End of the day it worked on the night, something which more often than not hasn't when it comes to Dutch and penos.

It could've backfired big time but it worked perfectly.

Just because something works doesn't make it a good decision. It's like a player not passing the ball for an open net. If he scores once it isn't the right decision if it means they miss the other 9 times out of 10

Lets be honest if Rafa or Brenda done this you would be spunking all over it just now.

Nope. Interesting you say that though when you consider the fans defending it as a good move...

I don't think he was defending it? Just saying it worked in the end. He had issues with it.

But I'll bow out here as I'm not really interested in debating it with people who base their opinion on who LVG will manage next.
