Japan kick off their defence of the title tonight in Newcastle against the 2007 champions Iraq. First up tonight though is Jordan and Palestine.

You'd have to say Japan and Iraq will walk this group, it is good to see Palestine represented in this competition.

Just a draw needed on Saturday against Korea. We're actually playing some decent stuff at the moment.

It's a rare thing to see an Australian side maintaining possession too. Regardless of who we've played down the years we've always been, almost route 1 type of get it, pass it, shoot type as opposed to build up, be patient and find the opening style which is working, at least it did in Brazil with some decent football and it is now.

Korea have disappointed me so far, I really thought they'd be a better team than they have been. I hope that line doesn't come back to bite me in the arse on Saturday.

It would be good to have Iran in the semi, beat them and be done with the spectre of 1997, then play Japan in the Final and be done with the horror show that was David Carney's defending in extra time in 2011.

China beat Uzbekistan 2-1 to secure qualification to the Quarters.

Saudi Arabia beat North Korea 4-1 who will have disappointed the Dear Leader with their elimination.

I won't lie, I'm not enjoying this competition very much. Other than the Socceroos games which are delayed by about 2 hours on Channel ABC, theres no coverage on free-to-air tele. I have no desire at all to get to the pub to watch games that don't involve Australia

I guess you take every tourney you participate in seriously at professional level, and no competition is 'pointless' but sandy I think on an international scale, the interest in this Cup is extremely low Sandy
