Its a penalty all day long. What would people prefer, Rooney to plant his feet and take a full grown man slamming into his ankle? That would be great for the sport, having to risk long term injury just to be awarded a penalty

In this instance, Rooney deliberately dragged his trailing leg in order to try to get some contact. As it happened, he wasn't touched, but I don't blame the ref because it certainly looked like an obvious penalty when I first saw it in real time.

Rooney knew exactly what he was doing and executed it very well. He didn't go down to avoid injury, he went down to get a penalty. Again, I don't blame him for that because I am firmly of the opinion that if a player invites the foul and and the opponent obliges, it's still a foul. But of course, in this instance, it wasn't a foul!

I simply cannot agree with the premise of your post though. Football is not a non contact sport. Nobody wants to see players injured, but its simply a facet of the game. To suggest that a penalty should be given where no contact was made and you use the argument that if contact was made, it might have hurt... C'mon.

Trying to get an accurate picture of reality, even when that's unpleasant or inconvenient!

So two footed lunges arent a foul if they miss?

I thought you might come back with that. In that case, the tackle is reckless and dangerous. I would argue that a keeper sliding into a loose ball in the knowledge that he might also catch the player is not reckless and dangerous in nature. That's not to say that it cannot lead to injury, but I think most people can see the difference.

If you're suggesting that a player should be penalised for a tackle that wasn't a foul and didn't hurt anyone, but could have, then you're saying that football should become completely non contact. Any contact made when two or more grown men are racing to get to the ball first could end in injury, so how would you police the wider aspect of your argument.

Going To Make You An Offer You Cant Refuse.
The gk sold it, Rooney bought it. Any player who doesn't go down there would be called honest by lots, and stupid by others.

See it every weekend. Would be interesting what people would say if it was their team being the recipient.
