I honestly don't get it

Obviously a talented kid but no more than that at the minute. Southampton got a lot of joy down their left hand side and were able to expose him quite a few times in the first half, but Carragher claims it only happened once. It's so strange.

Odd scene here as Pochettino is conducting his press conference, and Allardyce is just standing at the side of the room, interjecting.

More I see the 'tackle' the more it looks like an accident. The guy has played a pass and Matic got there late
i completely agree with this tbh

he passed the ball then matic got there later

he cant stop his foot as soon as the ball is passed

btw, chelsea have appealed the decision

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/31583092

shirley this must result in another game ban as it is frivolous

I don't think that Chelsea will have any success in appealing the red card. It was a horrendous tackle, but you can't react as Matic did.

To be fair to Ashley Barnes, I don't think he intended to hurt Matic, but it goes back to the discussion Paddy and I had last week. The tackle was dangerous and reckless and as such, should have been punished in my opinion.

Regarding the frivolous appeal, I assume Chelsea will go on the grounds that the tackle was so bad that the reaction was therefore understandable. I don't agree, but it might be the difference between a frivolous appeal and one that has some merit.

The only person 'tackling' is Matic though?

Ok, but how then would you describe the incident? The fact that Barnes' studs were firmly planted half way up Matic's standing leg is not disputed; even given that he didn't intend to do it (probably), it was dangerous at best.

If a player can be red carded for a studs up challenge that doesn't even make contact, how can a 'coming together' that results in studs half way up his standing leg be deemed as anything else but dangerous play?

I've been surprised by the post incident reaction to this. As I have stated, I think Matic had to be sent off for his reaction, but an awful lot of pundits, journalists and polls etc have said that Matic was justified in his reaction.

I would have thought that most people would agree that Matic had to go (irrespective of the tackle), but it seems that the consensus is split and possibly even in Matic's favour.

I'd describe it as a pass. Matic tried to tackle extremely late, didn't get any of the ball but got the follow through because he was late.

He was very lucky not to be hurt, but I'd think of it as more of a ball to hand, than hand to ball situation if you get me.
