Match of the Day presenter Lineker wrote on Twitter: "The FA attempting to defend their indefensible policy of leaving the best players out of England's U21 squad. "We never learn. What a wasted opportunity to gather invaluable international experience. Exasperatingly amateurish approach!" Do people genuinely not understand how the underage set up works? Why would you bring the likes of Sterling, Jones & Ox when a) they've not featured in the entire qualification camaign & b) they are regular/first choice full internationals. Underage tournaments are a chance for players to get used to travelling and living on top of each other in a pressurised setting, a thing very few players experience much of and some players don't cope well with. The only thing amateurish about the U21 performances is the English media's reaction and the flaunting of their clear non-understanding of the whole set up. Edited by Dotty, Jun 26 2015, 08:41 AM.

Thing is, you don't see the media commenting about it until there's an U21 tournament. We don't value the U21 set up at all, it's almost like a C squad. We're so desperate that if you're 19 and a good player, you can turn your nose up at the U21s and be dropped into the senior team. We throw our average youths at these tournaments and expect things to happen. If you're the best of the U21 players, you should be playing for the U21s. |

It's the usual suspects as well that comment whenever there's a tournie. Anyone that actually follows the 21s is commenting as expected; had a very good qualifying campaign, everyone in the squad was there on merit, players just weren't good enough in the end. I saw Barton weighed in with some verbal diarrhoea claiming that as soon as players feature in 1 senior squad that they turn there nose up at the U21s, He must mean Kane, Chambers, Stones, Berahino & Butland...damn them for thinking they're too good for the 21s..... Only other players that applies to are Sterling, Ox & Barkley, and why in the name of fork would full regulars go back to the U21s

Well, the better players are of course going to realise they're too good for the U21s now because we reserve it for the average players. If we filled up our U21 squad with excellent players, that wouldn't be the case. As it is, you can't expect a player to play for the seniors and then drop back to U21s. You have to make a decision to treat it more seriously or expect the same old. I don't follow the U21s anymore but I'd like to see players like Sterling, Oxocube, Barkley all in the same team, tearing it up in a lower pressure environment. |

Carvalho looking a bit ordinary today. Swede's have been marking the midfield brilliantly. |
